Gifted Teachers and Administrator of 2008 Contest!
and Meet the 2007 Winners

The Gifted Child.  No individual can be more exhilarating, or more frustrating. The parents and teachers who deal with these wonderful children can often be described in a single word: Exhausted. The gifted child can speak as an adult one minute, comparing the emotional relationships in Les Mis with relationships in her own life, or discussing potential conflicts between evolution and the bible, and in the next minute throw an impressive tantrum because she didn't get what she wanted... right now! She can have you in awe of her theories on accelerated space travel, or pulling your hair out in frustration over her argumentative refusal to do her part in everyday chores.

Does this sound like a child you know? The seven year old who wants to learn algebra, and is quite capable, but can't remember to bring home her spelling book? The three year old who wants to know if her new desk "comes complete." "Complete?" "You know, Mom, with a computer!" The high school student, not known for his scholastic talents, who quietly sits in his classes and 'doodles' detailed technical drawings of a new truck design, a design hauntingly similar to one produced by the major auto manufacturers decades later.

Welcome to Hoagies' Gifted Education Page. Here you can find the latest research and experience on parenting and educating these marvelous children, plus the best Internet and print resources to be found on every aspect of giftedness. You'll find people "just like you" with children "just like yours." An exciting discovery! And you'll find ideas, things to try, solutions you may not have thought of.

So join us, visit for a while, stay as long as you like. Follow our pathways to read and learn, and meet our friends and families along the way. And Welcome Home!

Every administrator and teacher and parent should read A Nation Deceived: How Schools Hold Back America’s Brightest Students Recommended The Templeton National Report on Acceleration, and the National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC) reply: Acceleration in Schools: A Call to Action.

-- Carolyn K., director (Who am I?), Hoagies' Gifted Education Page

What are the Characteristics of the gifted?  How do we handle Identification and Testing and Assessment of the gifted child?  What are the unique characteristics and needs of the Highly Gifted?  Often, these differences make them harder, instead of easier, to identify in the school situation.

Educational options include Traditional School and Home Schooling, but more often... a combination of the two.  Academic Programs are often added into the mix, as part of the curriculum, extra-curricular, or at home activities.

Parenting the gifted often brings unusual challenges.  Social/Emotional issues intertwine with educational issues, including Depression and Suicide Special Needs includes Twice Exceptional children, those who are gifted and learning disabled - at the same time.  These additional challenges often confound gifted identification, and definitely complicate gifted education.

Special Topics include Gifted At Risk, Gender Issues from both sides of the gender gap, Gifted Adults, Gifted / ESL (ELL, CLD, or whatever they are called at this time), as well as special areas of giftedness: Creatively Gifted, Mathematically Gifted, Technologically Gifted, Scientifically Gifted, and Philosophy.

Don't miss Gifted Support, both on the Internet and IRL (in real life).  Gifted Books offer us resources in many areas of giftedness, and the wonderful knowledge that we are not alone!  And Success Stories give us ideas and hope - other families have made this work, in a wild variety of ways.

Gifted Education Resources include additional Bibliographies, Charities, Journals, Legal Resources, Mandates, Products, Publishers, Readings and Gifted History

And A Lighter Note provides the humor... Smile through the Legend of the Pink Monkey, laugh through You Know You're The Parent of a Gifted Child When... and Ridiculous Things I Heard Today, and nod knowingly at I never wanted to be one of THOSE moms and If Dr. Seuss had a gifted child.....  Get great quotes from Education Quotes and Gifted Education Quotes
